Visa-free Africa: countries open to all African nationals

A growing group of African countries lets any African passport holder enter without a visa.

Recent changes

  • Togo introduced visa-free entry for all African passport holders on 18 May 2026.
  • Chad and the Republic of the Congo have announced visa-free entry for all Africans from 1 January 2027.

Already visa-free for all Africans

Rwanda, The Gambia, Seychelles, Benin, Ghana and Kenya were among the earlier movers. Ghana abolished visas for all African nationals from 1 January 2026; Kenya replaced visas with an electronic travel authorisation that it waives for most Africans. Exact conditions, allowed stay and any online registration differ by country, so check the destination's immigration site.

Why it matters

The African Union's free movement protocol has been slow to ratify, so individual countries are opening unilaterally. For travellers with African passports it widens the list of destinations that need no advance paperwork.
